Making chainsaw robot, carving logs

Check out Kiwico.com/StuffMadeHere for 50% off your first month of any crate!
The robot arm I used: hubs.ly/H0K42Hg0
Please consider supporting these projects through my patreon: patreon.com/stuffmadehere
When I was offered the opportunity to beta test an upcoming robotic arm from Tormach, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. CNC chainsaws baybeeeeee. Aside from being fundamentally awesome, it is a very interesting software problem. Since I didn't have to build the arm I was able to focus the project and the video on the software challenges of making something like this work. Thank goodness I didn't have to build the arm because the software almost killed me. I can imagine all kinds of next steps for this creation like machining textures with the chainsaw or cutting topiaries. I hope you like it!

Your videos are awesome! Idea: Mirroring programming While the saw is attached to the arm, have a zero point. Have a professional carver carve something while the arm records the movements. Once they are done, save the the program. Now, every time you place the log and robot arm at zero, you can just run that program... would be awesome! Mass produce famous carvers works at a fraction of the price.

luv your channel... luv your style... got an idea for you, make an arm that can throw the worlds fastest and perfect dart game. Stipulations: its got to function like a human arm e.g. it pivots at an "elbow" and at the "wrist". A preloaded magazine is allowed to hold the proper number of darts. Trying to decide if full 360 degree rotational movement at the "elbow" is allowed or it is to move forward, release dart and then return to a start position ( < 180 degree arc)... The full 360 rotational movement would be the faster but setting up the electrical would be harsh unless the control signal was wifi or bluetooth. The main power could run off of a slip ring/contact brush, but as mentioned, the signal for the controls.... hmmmm ;) ...

🤦‍♂️That is a raker; not an anti kickback tooth🙄Tour robot is pushing the saw into the wood. You do not force the cut. You let the saw cut at the speed it wants to. It will not cut faster if you press harder. Normally that wood just kill the engine. If your motor is powerful enough to keep going you are just creating heat and eventually the chain will snap.

😂I love your presentation. I have thousands of hours of Chainsaw time. The reason chainsaw art is so impressive is the amount of tip cutting involved which is a slightly dangerous and difficult to master endeavor especially if your upper body fitness is a disaster. You can carve up a piece of wood in reasonable amounts of time with a combination of slabbing and then tip cutting. Beware of fatigued stability muscles, loose chains, dull chains, dirty logs, hardwoods, and especially be very cautious of old chains, kickback, and flying chunks of wood which will surprise you with a whack to the face at some point.

As someone who uses a chainsaw on a daily basis, I must comment, that it's clear that your trying to push a dull butter knife through a piece of wood. In other words, it's dull. The second you put on a new, or freshly sharpened chain, you will see a world of difference. If you don't know how to sharpen it, you should probably take it to a shop, where they generally charge $9 to $12 per chain. Also, in on of the shots, the chain was loose. It must have the proper tension, and be Sharp.

As far as optimizers go, when I run into false extrema with gradient methods I've found that simulated annealing works pretty well and is usually pretty fast. At worst, you can use it to find a good starting position for a gradient approach.

The funny thing is that you didn't even bother to ask someone who uses chainsaws whether or not a pole saw could cut a log. Obviously you figured out the answer, it can't! A pole saw is meant for small branches. Heck, it probably even says that in the manual, which you always brag about not reading. :)

So... honest question here... Why didn't you iterate off of the pumpkin carving setup for this machine? I know it's not as cool as chainsaws - but you'd have the potential for some amazing functional 3d CNC work that could push the community forward (especially if you're willing to open-source your work) and also provide you with some very unique patents (which you could use to ensure that the community doesn't get bulldozed by some company that wants to own sole rights to this kind of tech.) I love your content, and expanding it beyond casual youtube shenanigans to create/evolve the industry would be mind-blowing.

Not an engineer, but am a chainsaw wielder. I think the problem you were having with the wood is a combination of not having the proper chain/bar combo for carving, the chain not being properly sharpened, and not having enough RPMs to cut through it. Solution: Better bar/chain, a good file, and a stronger motor pulling at 12k RPMs.

Idk maybe I am kinda dumb here but for the coding why would you not start with the points closest to the center and a 360°° Angle (aka twice the same cut) then instead of testing every angle you simply do a half aproximation so it checks 180° next then either 90° or 270° depending on if that cut goes into material or not and so on for about 5 or 10 steps (I doubt a chainsaw would be any more accurate than that. then repeat that for all relevant points until your initial structure. (aka any point that concave with a reasonable precision so points can for example be no closer than 5 cm together which would be about the accuracy I expect for this tool.) Once all those have been computed you simply do the same but in a single cut for all convex points. After that you would have the robot execute the found steps in reverse order. This should result in a reasonably fast program while allowing relative good precision. The only downside to this solution is that holes would be impossible to calculate so for example the dog legs would need to be connected to the body. I have thought of another solution that technically would allow holes in structures however it would only allow low polygon count inputs.

Several items that will help out a ton. An oiler for your chain. A chain that is designed for feller/buncher systems. These have more teeth per foot and are more aggressive in cutting. No kickback, your bot has strength in its joints to prevent any kickback from breaking things. The bar itself needs to be twice a strong as a normal consumer level bar. A bar designed for feller, buncher, firewood processor system is higher recommended. Look up Pacific Trail Manufacturing Systems for a decent selection. Make sure it'll fit your current setup, or you'll be cutting a new mount.
