Have the software support the human, but not replace totally. If its a drone, thats a different matter. But if there's a meatbag in the flightseat, you need to have human over-ride.

About options for controlling the lander, I'm hoping that in the near future, with the surge in brain-computer interface technology (Thanks to Neuralink mostly!) it'll be feasible to control a lander (or many other semi-autonomous systems for that matter) merely by brain signals.

Obviously these are some very smart people working on this project. But the number of checks and the incredible focus on safety above all else is why Elon Musk and SpaceX are eating NASA's lunch. They've just bought a big enough piece of property and are willing to crash some, or even a lot, of prototypes in order to move fast. Witness Starship.

I think the EGC thruster concept is really cool, but I don't understand how it would work at different attitudes? Wouldn't it's thrust vector introduce sideways drift as the vehicle tilts? Like, if you subtract the EGCT force vector from the gravity vector you should get a "simulated gravity vector". But since the EGCT vector rotates with the vehicle, the simulated gravity vector would appear to not point straight down all the time. Is that dealt with in software? If so, why use a EGCT at all and not just do the entire gravity spoofing in software?

1960's: Decide to go to the moon and do it in less than 10 years. 2010's-2020's: Decide to return to the moon, and spend 10 years trying to understand how a lander works. And go woke referring to prospective lander pilot as "she." What would Elon Musk say. Speed up, you move too slow, you gotta make it to the show. NASA has become a bloated unaccountable govt bureaucracy. The shot of the fat guy sitting watching while eating junk is emblematic of what NASA has become. When NASA was put in charge of studying surface of Earth, we could see the problem, but nobody objected. What does studying life on Earth have to do with space? Typical fed govt mission creep. Dumber every day? Might make for an interesting episode to address those issues. Yes, I'm trolling you, but for a good reason. Think and share.

Experience of automation in aviation up to the day says that autopilot is more precise than humans, and (most importantly) is more reliable. The only reason a human is needed in the cockpit is when things don't go as planned - the automatics is helpful only in "standard" situations which it has an algorithm programmed for. So the weakness of automation is only in the lack of versatility. But for a very specific mission like a lunar landing, which doesn't have as great variety of scenarios as daily aviation, a good coverage can be achieved easily. Therefore having computers at control at all times *is* the way forward. Training a human to do this job ("just in case") would be a waste of resource. Human skills would be more valuable making high-level decisions (where to land) while leaving the low-level job (how to land) to the machine. So I'd say don't even bother training humans to fly the lander.

I get your hesitance about stability augmentation, but these systems are highly reliable on aircraft, to the point no pilot wants to turn them off... At least outside of a controlled test. The point is if we want the ability to turn the SAS off, we’re saying we don’t have confidence in it and we need to continue testing and developing the system until we do. At least that’s the perspective of this flight test engineer.

Well... NASA has contracted this out (The lander), so why are they even bothering to use NASA personnel to do these test, when the contractors will have to do this testing on unique to them hardware? Self guidance is going to need a real landing site simulator that is comparable to the Nevada Lunar Test Site. Placing rocks on the ply-wood sheets aint going to cut it. Is there even hardware to test at this time by anyone yet? the first landing is supposed to be in 2024. They better get cracking.

Destin, I'm going to offer you a third option. Why not use the miniatures and test data to develop a simulator? A full motion simulator would allow for a wider variety of simulations, moon, Mars, etc. that would allows us to many more hours of simulation training for astronauts.

I agree, in Elite Dangerous you have advanced docking computers and super cruise computers that can fly for you, but you'll still need to battle different gravity on different planets and your ship responds far differently in these environments, if you aren't prepared your ship will go smashing into the surface of the planet. It all changes like you said. A highly trained piolet will need to be on that lander to take over if the software fails. Also the way the lander tests its thrusters sounds like its about to drop a sick beat lmao

no, they never admitted that. They admitted they have to test their technology past the radiation belts to verify they are well protected before sending men and women up again. Also that argument of "They cant get past LEO" kinda debunks space deniers claims that the ISS cant exist, considering its in LEO. 2 FOR 1 debunk on space deniers 😁

I think the that the Lunar Lander would be really good the way you explained it. so It should have a sort of Autopilot like in most of the airplanes we fly today where you also can Autoland with them but you also have to have a minimum where you have to disengage the autopilot and hand fly the thing whenever you feel uncomfortable with the Autopilot or in case of an emergency . And this was a great video for someone studying mechanical engineering, aviation aviation enthusiast and space lover. Than you!

The only place human-controlled systems should be given is in the failure mode where hardware can no longer operate normally and pilots should be trained as such. Humans are too big of a liability, and safety is number one. You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, but let's take risk out with some triple or quadruple modular redundancy, eh?

I tried Kiwico because of one of your videos. Unfortunately, Kiwico does not deliver to Norway. I subscibed to their service and over time payed for two crates, they said they sendt 5 or 6 crates over the months I was emailing them back and forth to get it sorted out. But Kiwico kept sending new crates seemingly without checking what had actually happened to all the previous crates... I never received any crates, I stopped emailing them because they would just say that they've sendt another crate for free, which never arrives...

If the new moon program is anything like the other post shuttle human flight programs, I suspect that if a human has to manually fly it's a bad day. Regardless, they should train to land on the moon however they are going to land on the moon. Back in Apollo that was completely manually. In Artemis, it looks like it's going to be nearly entirely automated.

The only problem with the argument that the pilot should fly the lander is that it is far too complex and counter intuitive with no room for error. Even Armstrong didn’t fly it, he gave the lander software the target destination and the software did the flying.
